The International Forum of Sovereign Wealth Funds (IFSWF) is a global network of sovereign wealth funds (SWFs) established in 2009 to enhance collaboration and dialogue between members, to promote a deeper understanding of SWF activity and to raise the standard for SWF best practice and governance. The Forum includes members from 31 countries from across the globe, including Singapore, Korea, UAE, New Zealand and China. Together these SWFs represent around $3.5 trillion in assets under management. NIC and Samruk-Kazyna have become IFSWF members in 2014.
The annual meeting brings together IFSWF members and financial leaders to discuss the key global issues affecting the investments community and serves as a great platform for improving collaboration and knowledge sharing. The 2017 Annual Meeting, which was held on September 5-7 2017 in Astana, was hosted by Samruk-Kazyna with the assistance of NIC.
By taking advantage of its network of contacts in the asset management industry, NIC was able to assist the IFSWF and Samruk-Kazyna in gathering a group of guest speakers with valuable expertise in private markets, thereby encouraging dialogue with a variety of perspectives on this year’s theme “Exploring New Frontiers”.
The event comprised two days of discussions for members and official observers, focused on the current key issues for global investors, centered on the low return environment, political volatility and other risks and challenges involved in seeking new frontiers for investment returns. These were followed by a third day of sessions open to a wider audience and focused more on the challenges of the privatization process and the investment opportunities it provides for various SWFs, particularly in Kazakhstan.
This year’s annual meeting featured NIC’s CEO Mr. Akylzhan Baimagambetov in the panel discussion on developing a digital economy and the role of SWFs in facilitating growth of digital services businesses in their respective countries. NIC’s Deputy CEO Mr. Serikzhan Rysbekov participated in the “Risk management in uncertain global markets” panel discussion, which focused on today’s key political, regulatory, environmental and cyber risks and how risk managers can factor these risks into their organizations’ investment processes. In addition, NIC held meetings with several large sovereign wealth funds.
Akylzhan Baimagambetov, CEO of NIC, said: “NIC has had the pleasure of collaborating with Samruk-Kazyna and IFSWF in putting together the agenda for this year’s Annual Meeting. The event’s discussions included insights and expertise of senior executives from a variety of world-renowned organizations and served as an incredible opportunity for productive dialogue between IFSWF members and observers. Hosting such an internationally acclaimed event significantly contributes to Kazakhstan’s further development as an active player in the sovereign investments industry.”
